Back after a long hiatus…

Greetings!
Due to an incredible school and work schedule I have been unable to keep up with this blog. However, the opportunity has arrived to update it and become active again. I have also added some credentials so the tutoring / teaching has greater credibility. More to come in the near future.

UPDATE on Status

Hi Everyone!

Most of my classes are over for the Spring, but still have 3 finals to submit on Friday. Those of you in school can understand the assorted stresses and strains which come this time of year. The good news is that on Friday, I begin my two weeks out of class. Then, on June 10, the whole mess is off and running again for an accelerated session, then the end of July, it finishes and I again have less than three weeks before Fall term kicks off…

While it may seem like an awful lot of work (which it is…), the ends justify the means. If I can pull this off, and do a little tutoring / inspiring along the way, then life is good. Bottom line is that if I can wade through all these books, papers, emails, and try to maintain something similar to a relationship with a significant other…, YOU CAN TOO!!! Keep pushing forward and you will be rewarded….

Additional Homework:

It does not matter what level of English you are currently at. I can get you to the next level[s]. All I ask at this point is that you write me a short story. You get to pick the topic. Send it to me at gwhallford@hotmail.com, and I will review it, give you tips, and ask you to rewrite it. If you do not want to rewrite, you are free to write another short story using the tips I provided. Email it to me, and we shall continue until you master the level of English you feel you need for your life. All of this project is based on your needs. I already read, write, and speak English, and really do not need the practice. However, if you require assistance at any level, I am here for you.

I just picked up a fantastic English / German dictionary to supplement my French and Spanish collection. Soon, I will add Mandarin, Cantonese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Italian, Arabic, and any others required. I am investing in you. All I ask is that you invest the time to do the needed work.

ENGLISH Projects…

Greetings Students,

Please bear with me as I struggle through so many classes reaching finals over the next few weeks. If I see a question, or a reply to the homework assignment, I will try and respond as fast as possible. If I take longer than you expected, please take pity on me, as I am doing this without either time or funding. CLAWSINSF will get better and we will be more capable of rapid responses soon, but right now we are buried with obligations….:-)

Writing Assignment for All Foreign Students

Here we go, you now have homework. Please try this out and email the results to my email address. Regardless of the quality of your work, please at the very least try to write a short story on the topic of your choice. I will critique your sentence structure, punctuation, and the use of vocabulary.

1.) Write me a paragraph about where you live. What is special about it? Do you like it there? What kind of residence do you have?

2.) Write me a letter. Explain who you are, why you are doing this work, and what do you expect out of the effort expended to learn English.

3.) Tell me about your family. Do you live in a big family? What was your grandfather or grandmother like? Do you have any children? What does your boyfriend/husband or girlfriend/wife do? If you do not have one, do you want one? And,

4.) If you do not want to divulge personal details, make it up as you go along. Tell me about your pet rhinoceros and your flying spiders, or anything you feel like writing about….

Have a Great Day and Enjoy Yourself!!!

Literacy is necessary for 99.999% of humanity.

Greetings Everyone!

For my domestic students, please utilize the reading list and confer with me on anything which seems difficult, confusing, or otherwise taxes your ability to concentrate on the objective[s] of this tutoring program. As you all have various capabilities, work with what you feel most comfortable with and allow the process to move forward. Use both your dictionary and thesaurus to work your way through whatever words do not make sense to you. In Hamlet, the English is a bit strange and probably too difficult to fully understand. However, it still provides some very interesting examples of how people spoke 400 years ago, and provides more drama than anything you will find on television.

For my foreign students, please bear with me while I develop a more universal collection of bilingual dictionaries. I currently possess both English / French and English / Spanish dictionaries, but hope to add Vietnamese, Greek, Italian, Mandarin, Korean, Portuguese, Cantonese, and Arabic (among others…), to my arsenal. This is not because I wish to learn these particular languages, but so I can translate some of your commentaries. Also, please try and work with someone else, and when working, only converse in English. Even if one struggles, the one helping may learn more through trying to assist your friend, than through the coursework I provide. It is truly amazing just how much you can learn while trying to explain something to someone else. It may frustrate you quite a bit, but the goal will be achieved easier by assisting another. Again, when working together, ONLY work in English. If you fall back into your native language, you lose the ability to fight through the problem effectively.

If you have any difficulties, please feel free to email me directly at: gwhallford@hotmail.com, and I will do everything possible to find an answer for you, or reframe the question[s] in a way which makes more sense. If you have the capability to call or text me my phone number is: (415) 948-9933. If I am not in class, or am at least awake, I will try and answer whatever you ask in an easy way….
